Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
